Highlights from 177th Regular Meeting on 15th April 2023

 

今回の例会では、Ice Breaker -一番初めの自己紹介を兼ねたスピーチがありました。SpeakerのHikoは、以前に別のToastmasters Clubに在籍したのち、ブランクを経てSenri Toastmasters Clubに入会してくれました。

感銘を受けた本と、どんなふうに人に貢献できるようになりたいか、ということを力強く話してくれました。真面目なスピーチの中に、ダンスが入り、セルフのボケツッコミがはいり、みんな大爆笑。すっかり打ち解けた雰囲気が出来上がりました。まさにIce Breakerでした。 

2番目のスピーカーKazは映画「Back To The Future」から学んだこと、というお題で話しをしてくれました。映画の中で、未来に行くシーン、なんと2025年だったのですね。すごーく未来な気分で当時見ていたのにもうすぐそこに。。。

3番目のスピーカーNaneaは、Researching and Presentingのプロジェクトで、トランス脂肪酸を排除する大切さを語ってくれました。プライベートなつらい体験を経て学んだ知識はとても説得力がありました。

Naneaといえばお手製のVisual Aid。素敵なのをいつも作ってくれるのです。画面上のスライドも便利で見やすいですが、手作りのものはご本人の想いが伝わりますね。

さて、今回即興スピーチ「Table Topics Speech」のセッションでは、Topicsマスターの会長Kamayanが、教育プログラム「Pathways」のPathの名前からヒントを得たお題を出してくれました。今回はほとんど全員があたり、大盛り上がり。Evaluatorを務めた直後に継続してTopicsマスターを務めたKamayan、お疲れ様～！

今回のBest Speaker、Best Evaluator, Best Table Topics のみなさんの授賞式の様子です。

さて、7月に始まり6月に終わるToastmastersの一年間。次の7月から役割を担うクラブ役員7名を選出する選挙が5月に行われます。それに先立ち、Club Leadership Commmitteeから、7名の次期役員候補の発表がありました。来月は例会の最後に役員候補が選挙スピーチを行います。

千里トーストマスターズでは和気あいあいと、お互いにフィードバックしながら学んでいます。

Grammarian notes （Grammarianのメモ）

In Toastmasters, we take turns serving in different roles and the Grammarian is one of them. A Grammarian pays special attention to the use of language by everybody who speaks during the meeting. They take notes of some descriptive words and phrases and rhetorical devices as well as grammar, usage, and pronunciation errors and mistakes, which they report toward the end of the meeting.

Toastmastersではいろいろな役割を交代で担当しますが、その一つがGrammarian。Grammarianはミーティング中に発言する人すべての言葉の使い方に注目し、状況を鮮やかに表現した単語やフレーズ、修辞技法、そして文法・語法・発音のミスなどをメモし、ミーティングの最後に報告します。

In this article, we take a look at some that Grammarian Hideo found in our 177th regular meeting on April 15.

今回は4/15の第177回例会でGrammarianのHideoが見つけたものの一部を紹介します。

* raison d'etre: a French phrase meaning the most important reason for somebody's or something's existance. （人の最も大事な存在意義を意味するフランス語）

* vital role: an important role （重要な役割）

* in the midst of a civil war: rigth in the middle of a civil war （内戦の最中に）

* capable of achieving anything: able to achieve anything （何であっても達成する能力がある）

* computer graphics was cheap: poor （しょぼい）

* hereafter: from now on, going forward （これから先）

* extensive research: research covering a large area （広範囲に及ぶリサーチ）

* be of service: helpful for others （役に立つ）

* recap: summary （要約）

* trait: a particular quality in someone's personality （人の性格の特徴）

◆ salary man: It would have been better put as "salaried worker."

◆ innovated a time machine:  The word "invent" would have suited the situation better because the speaker was talking about "Doc" Emet Brown in the movie "Back to the Future." （映画「Back to the Future」のドクについての言及なので innovate より invent の方が相応しかった）

◆I sticked to your speech.: Probably the evaluator wanted to say "I was attracted by your speech." or "Your speech was engaging." 

◆ greatly visual aids: It would be better to say "great visual aids" because the phrase "visual aids" function as a noun here. The tie between "visual" and "aids" is inseparable while the word "great" is simply describing what kind of visual aids are being discussed. （visual aidsという２語で１つの概念を表している名詞なので、説明は形容詞の great の方が適切）

Grammarian Hideo served as Word Master, who decides on Word of the Day, which everyone is encouraged to incorporate in their speeches during the meeting. He chose the word "profound" as Word of the Day. Many members used the word "profound" in an appropriate way. Great work, everyone!! （GrammarianはWord Masterを兼ねていて、Word of the Dayを選定します。Word of the Dayは参加者全員がミーティングの中で使うように奨励されているもの。今回は profound が選ばれ、多くの会員が適切な使い方で使っていました。素晴らしい❣）

Though we will not assign anyone as Grammarian at our next event, Impromptu Speech Practice Session, on April 22, members are sure to pay attention to their use of language in practicing impromptu speeches. Special Meeting - Panel Discusion "How Do You Write a Speech?" on 1st April, 2023

Senri Toastmasters Club holds a special meeting in months with five Saturdays.

Usually, our regular meetings consist of Prepared Speech session with three to four 5-7 minute speeches, Evaluation session (2-3 minute feedback speech for each speaker), Table Topics (impromptu speech) session and Report Session. But we do something different during Special meetings- something that we can enjoy and learn.

 On 1^st of April, a Panel Discussion titled “How Do You Write a Speech?” was conducted.

- What are fundamentals when writing a speech?

- Where do your speech ideas come from?

- Where do you find quotes or descriptive languages from?

The session was moderated by Marilyn, and panelists Tenten, Nanea, and Tami shared their perspectives on what they value in a speech, how they construct their speeches, and other tips.

The last question was "What motivates you to write/deliver a speech?”

It was an opportunity to revisit why we want to give speeches and why we joined the Toastmasters Club.

The panel discussion ended with a question-and-answer session.

This panel discussion was conducted using the "Moderate a Panel Discussion" project from "Pathways", an educational program and had a time limit of 20 to 40 minutes. I really wanted to spend more time to hear what they had to say, so I felt the time was too short.

After the panel discussion, we were divided into small groups in breakout rooms and had discussions. It was another good opportunity to bring members closer to each other.

 The latter half of the meeting was the Table Topics Session, led by Momo.

The topic on the April Fools Day was “to include a lie in a short speech”. Members enjoyed listening to speeches while guessing in which portion the speaker was lying.

The next meeting on 15th Apr will be a Regular Meeting in hybrid mode (online/in-person).

 みんなはスピーチをどうやって作っているのかな？

 普段のトーストマスターズの例会では　5-7分のスピーチが3，4本、それぞれのスピーカーのフィードバックを2-3分でスピーチするEvaluation セッション、即興スピーチのTable Topics Session、総括するReportセッションという構成ですが、スペシャルミーティングでは毎回、その形式とは別に何か楽しく学べるようなイベントを実施しています。

4月1日のスペシャルミーティングでは、「How Do You Write a Speech?」と題してパネルディスカッションを行いました。

 - スピーチを書くときに基本としていることは何?

- スピーチのアイディアはどこから来るの？

- 引用や、表現、どうやって見つけるの？

パネリストのてんてん、Nanea、Tamiが3人それぞれの観点から、スピーチで大切にしていること、どうやってスピーチを組み立てているか、その他のTipsを聴かせてくれました。

最後に「What motivate you to write/deliver a speech?」スピーチをしようと思うモチベーションはどこから来るの？という問いかけをしました。

なぜスピーチをしたいか、なぜToastmasters Clubに入ったのか、改めて考える機会になりました。

質疑応答セッションでパネルディスカッションは終了です。

ところで、今回のパネルディスカッションでは教育プログラム「Pathways」から、「Moderate a Panel Discussion」というプロジェクトを使用して行いました。このプロジェクトは制限時間が20分から40分。本当はもっと時間をかけて話を聞きたかったので、時間が短く感じました。

 この後はブレイクアウトルームに分かれて4人程度のグループでディスカッション。メンバー同士が近くなれる、このような機会がもてるのも、特別例会のいいところです。

 そして後半はTable Topics Session。

4月1日といえば？エイプリルフール。というわけで、Topicsmasterももたんの出したお題は、どこかに「嘘」を入れた即興スピーチをすること。オーディエンスはどこが本当でどこが嘘かな？と推測しながらスピーチを楽しみました。

 さて、次回4月15日は通常例会。会場とオンラインのハイブリッドで実施します。

Highlight from 176th Regular Meeting on 18th Mar 2023 - TEAM WORK

千里トーストマスターズクラブはのキャッチフレーズ(？)はチームワーク。今回はそのチームワークがいかんなく発揮されたミーティングでした。

コロナ禍の影響で完全オンラインに移行していたミーティングが、会場で行うミーティングに何名かがZoomで参加するハイブリッドミーティングに移行してかなりになりますが、たまに機材が我がままになることもあります💦

今回がその一例。ミーティング前に音声がうまく出ないトラブルがあったりミーティング途中でWi-Fiが切れて会場がZoomから切り離されたりしましたが、みんなが自分のできることを考えて行動してくれたおかげで影響を最小限に食い止めてミーティングを終えることができました。主に活躍してくれたMika、Kazさん、そしてまりりん、ありがとう！

機材トラブルだけでなく、互いのフォローも目立ったミーティングでした。なかでも今回は初めての役目を担当した会員が２人いましたが、事前にその会員へのフォローが行き届いていたことも手伝って、YasukoさんもYoshikoさんも素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せてくれました。Yasukoさんは不要な音声や無意味な単語の挿入に注意して報告するAh-Counterを担当してくれましたが、それぞれのスピーカーごとにどんな不要な音声を何回発したか、種類別に丁寧な報告をしてくれました。

Yoshikoさんはprepared speechに対するフィードバックをするevaluatorをはじめて担当してくれたのですが、これが初めてとは思えない落ち着きぶりで、しかも取り上げたポイントがまさに的を射た内容。スピーチの構成の良かった点、デリバリーの良かった点を具体例を交えて伝えてくれただけでなく、改善のための提案もしっかりと含んだ有用なevaluation speechでした。

Prepared Speechセッションでは、取り組んだプロジェクトに関する３分の報告や転勤する同僚への感謝を伝えるスピーチ（送別会の乾杯のシチュエーション）など普段のスピーチとは趣の変わったスピーチも含めて興味深い内容でした。

今回は新たな会員を迎えるInduction Ceremonyがあったり、アメリカのToastmasters clubの会員によるミニスピーチ（基本的にはミーティングは会員の練習のための時間なので、これは異例でかなり珍しいことでした）があったりと、普段と違った雰囲気のミーティングになりましたが、次回の 4/1のミーティングも数人のパネリストがスピーチについて意見を交わすパネルディスカッションがある予定で特徴的なミーティングになる予定。スピーチに対する見方や取り組み方について色んな意見が聞けると思いますよ。もし興味がおありなら、ぜひご参加ください。

The highlights from 175th regular meeting on 18th February 2023

 Valentine’s Day comes right before Spring every year. Somehow, whether you choose to give chocolates or not, it still feels like a fresh new start. 

 Today’s TMOD Eri chose the meeting theme,” Valentine’s Day”. It was a fun and appropriate way to show appreciation to the members. The warm introductions and pretty decorations sparked club morale and fostered a caring environment. This lifted the mood and we all felt comfortable to present our speeches, table topics and evaluations without becoming too nervous. 

The Agenda: Three Prepared Speeches. 

1) “The Story of John Manjiro” by Yoshiko, illustrated the dramatic life of a young boy who was rescued at sea at the age of 14 and later become the first Japanese to wear a necktie and ride on a train. 

2) “My Online Mentor” by Momo, presented a speech about the importance of having a mentor. When the pandemic broke out, meetings began to be held on Zoom. During the transition, she was able to continue to attend meetings thanks to mentoring from Marilyn. 

3) “Stamped As My Own” by Rene, spoke about leaders who inspire people. In doing so, she gave examples of famous leaders of whom have left an inspirational impact on her life. Especially notable were: leaders must serve as a compass, leaders must take accountability, leaders must have empathy. The passage was strong and emotional.

Special Meeting : Judge Workshop and Mock Contest on 4th February 2023

 スピーチに情熱を注ぐ我々にとって、コンテストは年に1度の特別なイベントです。今回はコンテストスピーチに対してクラブの方にJudges／審査を学んで経験してもらおう！という趣旨で特別例会を開催しました。

私自身は、Workshopで､ Judges／審査の心構えとポイントを解説させていただきました｡日頃から､人に伝えることで自分の理解も深まると言われますが、まさに準備を通して私自身もJudges／審査の重要性をよく理解することができました。ワークショップの中では審査基準とともに①Judges／審査になると、自ずとコンテストスピーチを集中して聞かなければならないので学びも多くなる。②自分がスピーチを実践するときに審査基準を理解しておく事はとても有用。という事を伝えさせてもらいました｡ 

そして､実践編ではエリアの英語スピーチコンテストに出場予定のMaririnとTamiさんからコンテストスピーチをしてもらい､ 残りの参加者全員が審査員になって評価いたしました｡ 

スピーチをContent, Delivery, Languageに分解して点数をつけていくプロセスについて、今回初めて実践されたメンバーも多かったと思います｡

スピーチ終了後はコンテスタントを交えて､Breakout Roomにてお互い意見交換しました。

やっぱり今回もあっという間に時間が過ぎていく充実したSpecial Eventであったと思います。
